How I Found Blogging

Once upon time at the Gender Equity Resource Center at UC Berkeley, they were giving away free books to students who had worked on the women's conference. Yours truly was there, sifting through the sparkly advance copies. I picked up a book by Sabrina Ward Harrison and asked my group members "anyone want this one?" Everyone shook their heads, so I stuffed it in my bag next to my reader for Death and Dying in Medieval Art (an entire class about memento mori) and my textbook on De Stijl.

You can probably guess which book I grabbed when I went to the coffee shop that afternoon.

Anyway, I checked out Sabrina Ward Harrison's website soon after, which was designed by Christine Castro of Darling Design. Reading Christine's blog on Darling Design was my first taste of a design blog. I was totally and completely hooked. How did I not know about this before?? Why am I looking at skulls and primary colors when I could be looking at flowers, polka dots, and the color pink?

From Darling Design, I found Oh Joy! which was linked on Christine's page. When Joy started blogging about her wedding in 2006, that's when the wedding blog world opened up and swallowed me whole. I'm still swimming around in its stomach, having a fine time.

I can't believe blogging has absorbed so much of my attention for the past four, almost five years. It has been a constant source of information and inspiration, from photography to writing to design to how to deal with wedding drama.

May 2010 will mark 5 years since I picked up that free copy of Sabrina Ward Harrison's book. I think blogging and I should celebrate.

How did you start blogging?

Awww. Hmm, I'm not sure how I found blogging. About 6 months ago, I was back in the US, stressed out, and thought blogging would be a good way to funnel my wedding related thoughts (friends only want to hear so much right). I might have googled budget brides later and discovered a few bloggers. A little linking back and forth and the rest is history.

I do remember you were one of my first blogging friends though - yay! :)

I have always heard about the blogging world and read a few friend's blogs here and there...even tried my own personal blog once but could not seem to get motivated to keep it up. Enter - my engagement! Like Chic 'n Cheap, I knew there would only be so much wedding talk my friends and family could handle so I started a blog on Get Married's web site. I didn't like how they 'monitored' and limited my blog posts though so I found a fellow blogger's personal blog and figured I'd start my own. It's only been about 3 weeks so far and I am absolutely loving it! :)

i started blogging back in 2002 (sophomore year of college) when my siblings and cousins had xanga and live journals pages. we would just write about our days :) it was so simple and fun.

I started blogging when I was in HS, and did it as a way to stay in touch with the friends I moved away from after middle school. My blog has evolved since then, moving from personal life updates, to rants, to weddings. Not sure where else I would be able to let out my creative thoughts!

AWESOME post! My cousin has a blog and I would read that, but thought nothing of it really. I thought blogging was like tweeting or Facebook! LOL!
Anyway, I friend at my gym told me about Snippet & Ink and Style Me Pretty for wedding references. It was all down hill from there.....

Love your blog!

Good question. I used to write a lot in college and I've missed it/tried to get back into writing periodically, but I'm a lazy bum at heart. I've been reading news and current event blogs since the early 2000s and personal finance blogs were instrumental in helping me turn around my financial ship. I thought - "yeah, I could do that," but I never did. Then, two years ago, I found ten thousand only when I started researching LA wedding prices and she pulled me into the world of wedding and design blogs. I thought, "yeah, I could REALLY do that." I felt silly about it until I was engaged, however. And since then, I think the wedding + pretty + important life change transition finally gave me a real structure that works and motivates me to write consistently. I plan to keep this up even after the wedding is done now.

EAD! Through searching for "aquamarine engagement rings" or something similar.

Once we got engaged I started googling all sorts of wedding related stuff. Many of the pages that google suggested were other people's blogs. I quickly got absorbed into reading those and it eventually occurred to me to start my own. Who would have known that it would have turned into such and obsession! :)

I can't remember how I got into blogs but I suddenly realised just over a year ago that I was well and truely hooked. It started with photography, went on to cookery and interiors and now of course weddings.
Love them all!

Similar to Chocolate Lover for me. In addition, I needed to vent about weddings and have a location for all my wedding ideas.

Thanks for all the great responses!! I find it super interesting to hear how people got into blogging, because it's been a large part of my leisure time and sometimes I wonder "what did I do before this??"

I'm glad you've all made it to the blogging party. =)
