Mo+Boy Tie the Knot: Cutting the (Cup)cake

[Om nom nom nom nom]

[To see the cupcakes in their beauty shots, click here.]

I forgot about the cupcakes. Me, of all people, forgot about eating the cupcakes. At one point the coordinator told me we should probably find a good place to stop and do the cake cutting, and then I looked at her in my daze of being the bride and said "Oh yeah...we have cupcakes to eat!" The cupcakes that I fretted about here and here. We could actually eat them now.

Everyone crowded around us at front, and Jessamyn told me later that she had never seen a crowd quite so excited about the cake cutting. I don't know if it's because they were all starving for cupcakes or because they knew how excited I was about the cupcakes, but either way, there was a lot of baked goods love under the tent.

[I just might be singing to the cupcake. We had Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat's Lucky in the background.]

[Ok, so we technically didn't cut anything, which would have been the more demure thing to do. But this worked too! The boy's cupcake choice was a black and white, mine was red velvet.]

[Huzzah!! Cupcaaaaaakkkkesss! I love this photo.]

[Smooches!]

[The crowd devoured what was on the table, luckily there were more in the boxes!]

Having a cupcake wedding in the San Diego area?

I recommend...
Influx in Golden Hill and Little Italy (super moist, frosting is great, unfortunately I found this place too late! Even if you're not getting cupcakes, you should check out the cafe for lunch and a cup of coffee.)
Babycakes in Hillcrest (the cupcakes were HUGE and tasty, even better was the great service we received. We abandoned the idea once my godmother agreed to bring Sprinkles from Newport Beach.)
Sprinkles in La Jolla (opening this month in the Whole Foods shopping center next to UCSD!)

And if you have anyone willing to bring baked goods from the OC...

Mo+Boy Tie the Knot: Cupcake Beauty Shots

While we had our family portraits, the cupcakes were getting their pictures taken too.
I made a little sign (you'll see in the photos below) with which decorations corresponded with which flavors. Luckily our guests used the sign (yes!), and now I have a memento of which flavors we served: red velvet, vanilla, peanut butter chocolate, black and white, and coconut.
The big hit? Red velvet. By far. They were gone the fastest, while peanut butter chocolate lagged behind. I was also surprised at how fast the coconut cupcakes went!

We ordered around 210 for 140 guests, and we had about 65 (!) leftover. Our guests were so full from dinner that many shared or only had one cupcake, despite the consistent ogling throughout the night. (There was actually someone from the catering company guarding the cupcakes so that no one would eat one before the "cutting"!)

I also want to give a shout-out to Sprinkles in Newport Beach. They were super nice when I asked about the order in person, made it really easy over the phone and suggested the decorations, and called the day before the wedding to confirm the pick-up and how I would like them to be packaged. To top it off, everyone loved the cupcakes. (I think. At least I loved the cupcakes, but that's a given.) Three cheers for Sprinkles!

Psssst: For anyone in San Diego, Sprinkles will be opening in La Jolla this Fall!! Eeep!

A cupcake while you wait

[Cupcakes at The Chocolate Box]

I'm having a lovely time in Seattle, and I promise more pictures when I return on Saturday, but in the meantime here are some pictures I took of cupcakes at The Chocolate Box (I'm not sure anything named 'The Chocolate Box' could possibly be a bad place).

My apologies for being absent in the blogosphere, but I'll be back up to speed once I fly back to San Diego! Enjoy the eye candy!

Cupcake Recap

I'm back from my trip, and I come bearing cyber cupcakes! Aren't they adorable? They are mini-sized cupcakes--we ate about four of them right off the bat when we got them.

[Cupcakes from Sibby's Cupcakery, photo by joonepah; cupcakes $3.25, mini-cupcakes $2]

You might recall that I had planned four cupcakery visits, but we quickly downsized that to two after the first tasting. Looks like you CAN have too much sugar, imagine that!

Our first stop was Sibby's Cupcakery. I found Sibby's through Stinkerpants' blog (aka, Mrs. Creampuff,) and they looked so good that I knew I wanted to put them on the 'to try' list. I had to pre-order the cupcakes a week in advance, and although it was a "wedding tasting" I still had to pay the $24 for a dozen mini-cupcakes. Aside from those facts, the cupcakes were super cute.
I mean, look at the photo---freakin' adorable, no? Our favorite was their bestseller, Grandma's Chocolate Teacake, which was very moist. We shared the cupcakes with my sister and brother-in-law to get a well-rounded assessment of the cupcakes.

In the end, we all tasted an after-taste of flour. Our mouths felt a little chalky after each cupcake. But overall we didn't have too many complaints. I mean, we did end up scarfing all of them down, so they most certainly weren't bad! I think I had psyched myself into thinking Sibby's was going to be spectacular that I was honestly a little let down.

The next day we were going to be in Berkeley so we decided to make an appointment at Teacake Bakeshop in Emeryville. Right off the bat, I thought I would have to pay for the tasting because I hadn't encountered a cupcakery who would accommodate us on non-tasting days. But Teacake's manager, Sarah, surprised me by offering the tasting for free since we were coming in from out of town and had a tight schedule. Right off the bat, I was immediately impressed of how considerate she was. But how were the cupcakes?

[Teacake Bakeshop in Emeryville, CA; cupcakes $3, mini-cupcakes $1.75]

We arrived early because we ended a venue appointment early, and they were happy to accommodate us at an earlier hour. They even had our cupcakes all ready for us--four regular-sized cupcakes for the price of $0. We also really appreciated that one of the bakers, Anne, came and sat with us (even though the shop was really busy) to answer any questions.

Maybe it was my psyche telling me that Teacake was being super nice to us, but the cupcakes tasted awesome. Both the boy and I scarfed down our preferred flavors--coffee for him, banana for me--and left full and happy.

If you are in the Bay Area, I highly recommend visiting Teacake Bakeshop. They were very nice and accommodating for us weary travelers from San Diego, and the baked goods (including the cookies--yes, we even bought some cookies to try,) were really yummy.

Move Over Red Velvet

Now you can get "green velvet" cupcakes at Sprinkles in honor of St. Patrick's Day. I don't think the green cupcake is working for me, it reminds me too much of mold. But maybe I'll give it a try when I visit Sprinkles this weekend. Would you eat a green cupcake?

Kara's Cupcakes

[All images from Kara's Cupcakes]

I've been really busy lately. Plus I got sick, and so my blog posts have been unfortunately less enthusiastic. But my energy is slowly coming back, and I'm getting ready for my sister's baby shower in June (exciting!!), so I've also been busy being doused in cotton candy pink!
My sister's best friend is bringing some scrumptious looking cupcakes from Kara's Cupcakes in San Francisco. I haven't tried them, but they look very yummy and fan-say. All I can say is that cupcakes should be presented in a glass dome from here on out. Nothing else will do.

Cupcakes for Baby

[Images from Flickr users: Tri_PoodleCupcakes Nouveau; Clever Cupcakes]

My sister's belly is getting bigger, summer is approaching, and before we all know it, our family will have a really adorable new addition. I am planning the baby shower, and while I'm sure there are a lot of other things I could be planning right now, all I can think about is the fact that 1) it's a party, so therefore, 2) we get to eat CAKE. Cake cake cake cake cake. Cake. CAKE! It's gonna be one cupcake-tastic shower.

C is for Cookie...

[All images from Crazy Cake Company via Flickr]

Cookie Monster was my favorite character on Sesame Street. Forget Elmo. Forget Grover. It was all about cookie monster, who, by definition, got to stuff his face with cookies all day long. And no one could do anything about it. Because that's the type of monster he was. Cookies. All day long.
So imagine my squeals of delight when I saw these cupcakes by Crazy Cake Company based in Sacramento, CA.
Last year, the boy surprised me with a ginormous vegan cupcake topped with gigantic candles spelling my age out to everyone in the world. I think this year should be a new age of maturity in which I receive some cookie monster cupcakes for my birthday. Because C is for cookie. And that's good enough for me.
