What's Your Dream?

Recently I was coloring with a four-year-old at the library, and as he was pondering what color pastel to use for the window in his drawing, he turned to me and asked,

"You volunteer here?"

"Yup, I do." I said to him, a little amazed he knew the word for "volunteer".

"Why?" He said in quite possibly the cutest way possible.

"Um...well, see that lady over there?" I pointed over to the children's desk.

"Yeah, that's the librarian." I was with a smart kid.

"I'm studying to be just like her."

He continued coloring and then looked up again and said, "Is that your dream?"

I was with a really smart kid. "Is that my dream?"

"Yeah, is that your dream, to become a librarian?"

"Oh...um...I have a lot of dreams, I like to write and I like to take pictures...but I guess becoming a children's librarian is my most immediate dream."

"Why?" That window he was coloring was just about filled in by this point.

"Well...I like children's books, and I like that the library is a community, and I get to do fun crafts with kids just like you." I thought he'd maybe forget what we were talking about and move onto the next pastel color, but instead, he said with a really big smile,

"But you're hanging out with me now and you don't even have to go to school for that!"

He looked pleased with his cleverness. "You make a good point," I said. And then I continued coloring.

Do you have a dream?

It's because so many kids are so bright, intuitive and (most importantly) inquisitive that I know the world will be a better place when they grow up.

Okay that sounded totally corny. But I really do think "the kids are alright".

He was right on - you do get to do what you want to do now. (It's just you want to get paid to do it ... but let's not bother his sweet little mind with concepts like money. They don't matter yet!)

Aww what a great story! That's so cute! I'm glad you're able to interact with kids who are appreciative the time you spend with them! Do I have any dreams? I do...but I'm far from them, working my way up in an advertising agency is far from glamorous!

I have lots of dreams. One of them is to get into a great grad program in English! I'm not going for the MLS though. I'm hoping for a Ph.D. in lit so I can teach college.

That's really cute!! Kids are just so intuitive like that when they're young aren't they?? I didn't know you're going to be a librarian too!! I think it's awesome that you're following your dreams!
